David Mack competed for Locke high school in California and was the CIF California 880 yard champion two years in a row. He earned a track scholarship to the University of Oregon where he was a standout performer from 1979 to 1982.
He won three consecutive PAC-10 800 meter championships in 1980 (1:48.28), 1981 (1:46.99) and 1982 (1:48.11). He was an All-American in 1980 when he placed 6th in 800 meters in the NCAA Championships at 1:47.48, and again in 1982 when won the NCAA 800 meter title at 1:48.0. His best 800 meter time at the University of Oregon was 1:45.55 in 1982. Also in 1980, he placed 6th in the Olympic Trials. He represented the US in the World Championships. Mack's career best of 1:43.35 was set in 1985 at Klobenz, Germany while running for the Santa Monica Track Club. At the time his 800 meter best was the third best of all-time.
