Puckett , Jim
Because of his dominant speed at Cove High School High School Jim Puckett was known as the "Cove Comet." While in High School Puckett was Oregon's dominant sprinter of his time having won the State B 100 yard championship three times (1956-1958), set the state all-time record in 100 yard dash with a time of 9.6 seconds and also won the state 220-yard titles in 1957 and 1958. He also won the long jump state title in 1958. Puckett went on to the University of Oregon where he made significant contributions to the track team during the 1960, 1961 and 1962 seasons running the 100, 220 and 440. In 1962, he competed for the University of Oregon in the 220 as a member the Oregon team that won the NCAA title.
