Spoelstra , Erik
Erik Spoelstra was born in Evanston, Illinois but spent his high school and collegiate years in Portland, Oregon where he became a star basketball player playing guard at Jesuit High School (1988) and the University of Portland (1992). He was one of Jesuit High School's all-time statistical leaders ranking:
3rd all-time career assists (488)
3rd all-time career 3-pointers made (156)
6th all-time career 3-point % (384)
3rd all-time career free throw % (824)
After high school he started four years for the University of Portland, and was West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. While at Portland he averaged 9.2 points per game, 4.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds. After college he played two years of professional basketball in Germany before securing various employment with the Miami Heat of the NBA beginning in 1995. In April 2008, retiring Miami Heat coach Pat Riley named Spoelstra to succeed him as head coach. At the time of his hiring the 37 year old Spoelstra was the youngest coach in the NBA.
