O'Brien , Dan
Dan O'Brien was born July 18, 1966 in Portland, Oregon and was an outstanding athlete at Henley High School in Klamath Falls, Oregon. O'Brien was a legendary all-around athlete in southern Oregon where he was state track champion his senior year in 4 events and was also All-State in football and basketball. He participated in track at the University of Idaho, and emerged on the national scene in the decathlon in 1991 when he won the U.S. Track & Field National Decathlon Championship, and the World Decathlon Championship which he won two more times in 1993 and 1995. He failed to make the 1992 Olympic team, but set a world record of 8,891 points just following the Olympics. Other titles include a total of 5 national decathlon championships, a world record in the heptathlon, 1994 Goodwill Games Championship, 1996 Olympic Gold Medal and a 1998 Goodwill Games Championship. O'Brien was inducted into the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 2005.
