Salazar , Alberto
Alberto Salazar was born August 7, 1958 in Havana, Cuba. After becoming an American citizen he became one of the country's great high school distance runners at Wayland (Mass.) High School. In the fall of 1976, he began his career at the University of Oregon where he ran cross country and distances. He helped the University of Oregon win an NCAA track title in 1977 and he won an NCAA Cross Country title in 1978. He set American records in the 5,000 meters (13:11.93), 10,000 meters (27:25.61) and the marathon (2:08:13.) Salazar won the New York Marathon three times and the Boston Marathon once. He won a silver medal in the 1982 world cross country championships and placed 15th in the 1984 Olympic Marathon. Salazar has been elected to many halls of fame:
