Etzel , Joe
Joe Etzel enrolled at the University of Portland in 1957 and and became a star pitcher on the baseball program. In 1957 and 1958 he led the team to the NCAA playoffs. After graduation in 1960 he served the school as its head basketball coach for five years and head baseball coach from 1966 to 1986, and in 1979 he was named Nor-Pac coach of the year after leading the team to the conference title. He coached some 34 players who played professional baseball, but he is best known for his 34 years of work as the University of Portland's Athletic Director. Under his leadership the school's athletic program grew by leaps and bounds, culminating with a women's NCAA national soccer title in 2002. Etzel retired in 2004.
